Description
Summary:Plate 12 from FORTY ETCHINGS: FROM SKETCHES MADE WITH THE CAMERA LUCIDA, IN NORTH AMERICA IN 1827 AND 1828 by Captain Basil Hall. From the author's description: "In the interior of the country, or indeed in any newly-cleared district of the forests in America, the houses are built of rough logs, notched at the ends so as to fit one another, and to allow of their coming almost in contact along the whole length. The chinks are then filled up with mud, or with moss; but in many parts of the country, especially in the Southern States, we came to log-houses where no such refinement was thought of. I remember upon one occasion being able, while lying in bed, to thrust my arm between two of the logs into the open air! There is generally a brick or stone chimney at one end on the outside, communicating with a fire-place within."
