Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of colonel). Raised and funded the "Hampton Legion" at the start of the war and was commissioned as a colonel. Promoted to brigadier general in May 1862, major general in September 1863, and lieutenant general in February 1865. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the Peninsular campaign, Seven Pines (wounded), Seven Days', Antietam, Brandy Station, Gettysburg (wounded), the Wilderness, Petersburg, and the Carolinas.
