Summary:(Unable to determine rank in photograph.) War of 1812 veteran. Resigned his U.S. Navy commission in 1861 and joined the Confederate Navy. Promoted to Commodore in December 1861. Major commands and engagements include the defense of the James River, the naval station at New Orleans, Confederate naval forces on the upper Mississippi, the defense of Columbus, Kentucky, and New Orleans.
