Hardee resigned as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army. ) Graduated from West Point, 1838; Mexican War veteran. Author of RIFLE AND LIGHT INFANTRY TACTICS, popularly known as HARDEE'S TACTICS, the standard textbook for infantry tactics during the Civil War. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in January 1861; appointed to brigadier general in the Confederate Army in June 1861. Promoted to major general in October 1862 and promoted to lieutenant general in October 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Carolinas. After the war, Hardee moved to Selma, Alabama, as a planter.
