Resigned his U.S. Army commission in April 1861 and was commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Army shortly afterward. After promoting through the grades, Steuart was promoted to brigadier general in March 1862. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the 1862 Valley campaign, Cross Keys (wounded), Gettysburg, Spotsylvania (captured and exchanged), Petersburg, and Appomattox.
