Resigned his U.S. Army commission in April 1861 and was appointed colonel in the 4th Texas Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general in March 1862, major general in October 1862, lieutenant general in February 1864, and general in July 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Gaines' Mill, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg (wounded), Gettysburg (wounded), Chickamauga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Franklin and Nashville campaigns.
