Graduated from West Point, 1837; Seminole War and Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in 1856 and moved to Louisiana. Appointed to the Louisiana militia in 1860 and captured the Baton Rouge Arsenal in February 1861. Commissioned as a brigadier general in March 1861 and assumed command of the Gulf Coast defenses from Pensacola to Mobile. Promoted to major general in September 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. Relieved by General Joseph E. Johnston and served as Davis' advisor for the remaining part of the war. After the war, Bragg worked as civil engineer and died in Galveston, Texas, in September 1876.
