During Missouri's succession crisis, Parsons supported succession and entered Confederate service as brigadier general in November 1862. Although not confirmed, Parsons was promoted to major general in the field in May 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Carthage, Wilson's Creek, Lexington, Corinth, Prairie Grove, Little Rock, Helena, and the Red River campaign.
