Summary:Confederate diplomat who, along with John Slidell, was seized at sea by the U.S. Navy while traveling on the British steamer "Trent." This action created a foreign relations crisis between the United States and Great Britain that came close to a third war with Great Britain. The event also increased British sympathy for the Confederate cause. Mason arrived in Britain in January 1862 and served as Confederate commissioner to Great Britain until the end of the war.
