Veteran of the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, Seminole War, and Mexican War. Surrendered Texas and all Union forces under his command to General Ben McCulloch in March 1861. Dismissed from the U.S. Army and appointed as a major general in the Confederate Army a few weeks later. Briefly commanded a military district in Louisiana but retired in October 1861.
