Promoted to brigadier general in June 1861, major general in January 1862, and lieutenant general in May 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Fairfax Courthouse, First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Seven Days' (wounded), Winchester, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. Due to ill health, he was assigned to the Department of Richmond from June 1864 until the end of the war. After the war, Ewell farmed in Tennessee, where he died in January 1872.
