| Summary: | (Photographed in civilian attire.) Antebellum congressman and governor of Georgia. Served as Secretary of the Treasury in the Buchanan administration. Member of the Provisional Confederate Congress; administered the oath of office to Jefferson Davis in February 1861. Commissioned as a colonel in the 16th Georgia Infantry in July 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in February 1862 and major general in September 1863. Major campaigns and battles include the Peninsular campaign, Lee's Mill, and South Mountain Gap.
