Summary: | Represented Alabama in the Confederate States Provisional Congress in 1861 and was a member of the Confederate States Congress from 1861 to 1863. Appointed as a lieutenant colonel of the 5th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. Served as the president of Howard College in Marion, Alabama, from 1865 to 1868. Taught at Richmond College in Viriginia from 1868 to 1881. Became the general agent for both the Peabody Education Fund (in 1881) and the John F. Slater Fund (in 1891).
