(No uniformed photograph is known to exist). A prominent Georgia attorney and politician. Served as U.S. representative and U.S. senator before the war. Failing to become the first president of the Confederacy, Toombs settled for its first Secretary of State. However, Toombs resigned from office in July 1861 and was commissioned as brigadier general. Major campaigns and battles include the Peninsular campaign and Antietam. Dissatisfied with the handling of the war, Toombs resigned his commission in March 1863 and returned to Georgia where he spent the remainder of the war. After the war, Toombs briefly lived abroad before returning to Georgia to reestablish his law practice in 1867. He died in Washington, Georgia, in 1885. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary. New York: Vintage Books, 1988. Davis, William C., ed. The Confederate General. Vol. 6. National Historical Society, 1991. |
