Resigned his U.S. Army commission and was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Confederate Artillery in March 1861. After promoting through the grades, Wheeler was promoted to brigadier general in October 1862, major general in January 1863, and lieutenant general in February 1865. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Corinth, the Kentucky campaign, Perryville, the Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Carolinas. By 1870 Wheeler had settled in north Alabama, where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for numerous terms. During the Spanish-American War, he served as major general in the volunteers and saw action in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War.
