Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Mexican War veteran. Commissioned as a colonel in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry at the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in October 1862 and major general in March 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh (wounded), Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin, and Nashville. After the war, Bate served as governor of Tennessee and as a U.S. senator. Bate died in Washington, D.C., in March 1905 and is buried in Nashville, Tennessee. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
