Summary:(In photograph, buttons on coat indicate rank of major general, although Cox was never promoted beyond brigadier.). Commissioned as a major in the 2nd North Carolina Infantry. After promoting through the grades, Cox was promoted to brigadier general in May 1864. Although photographed as a major general, Cox was never promoted above the grade of brigadier. Major campaigns and battles include Antietam, Chancellorsville (wounded), the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, 1864 Valley campaign, and Petersburg. After the war, Cox served as judge and U.S. representative. Cox died in Richmond, Virginia, in December 1919 and is buried in Raleigh, North Carolina. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
