Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Commissioned as a lieutenant colonel in the 15th Mississippi Infantry in June 1861. After promoting through the grades, Walthall was promoted to brigadier general in December 1862 and major general in June 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Mill Springs, Corinth, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin, and Nashville. After the war, Walthall returned to Mississippi, where he became a driving force of the Democratic party and served as a U.S. senator.
