Summary:(Cap in photograph appears to have insignia of a lieutenant.) Resigned U.S. Navy commission in May 1861 and was commissioned into the Confederate Navy. Later commanded the Confederate raider, C.S.S. Florida, which captured approximately 55 Union merchant ships. After the war, Maffitt settled in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he became a writer.
