Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of colonel.) Mexican War veteran. Appointed as a colonel of the 7th Virginia Infantry at the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in June 1862 and major general in September 1864. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Seven Days', Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, New Bern, and Gettysburg (wounded and captured). Paroled in September 1863; because of serious wounds sustained at Gettysburg, he spent the remainder of the war assigned to administrative duties. After the war, Kemper returned to Virginia to resume his law practice and was later elected governor. He died in April 1895 and is buried at Walnut Hills, his home in Orange County, Virginia.
