Resigned his U.S. Army commission in May 1861 and was commissioned as a major in the Confederate Army in May 1861. After promoting through the grades, Garnett was promoted to brigadier general in November 1861. Major campaigns and battles include the Valley campaign, Antietam, North Carolina, Suffolk, and Gettysburg. Garnett was killed at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, while participating in Pickett's Charge.
