After promoting through the grades, Garnett was promoted to brigadier general in November 1861. Major campaigns and battles include the Valley campaign, Antietam, North Carolina, Suffolk, and Gettysburg. Garnett was killed at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, while participating in Pickett's Charge.
