Summary: | (In cadet commander uniform). Born and educated in Virginia, Dr. Garland began his teaching career in Virginia before accepting the chair of the English Department at the University of Alabama in the early 1850s. Elected as president of the University in 1854. After the Civil War, Garland was instrumental in raising funds to rebuild the campus after its destruction by Union troops.
