A major general in the Virginia state militia, commissioned as a colonel in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in March 1862 and major general in January 1865. Major campaigns and battles include the 1862 Valley campaign, Second Manassas, Groveton (wounded), Fredericksburg, Charleston, and the Carolinas.
