Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Entered the Confederate Army as a captain in March 1861. After promoting through the grades, he was promoted to brigadier general in February 1862. Transferred to the cavalry in 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Fort Pillow, Franklin, and Nashville. After the war, he served multiple terms as a congressman from Mississippi.
