Summary:(Collar indicates rank of colonel, while button arrangement indicates rank of brigadier general.) Graduated from West Point, 1837; Seminole War and Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in July 1861 and was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Army in September 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in March 1862. Major campaigns and battles include New Madrid and Island No. Ten (captured). Exchanged in October 1862; spent the remainder of the war as a staff officer for several commands in the Western theater.
