Elected colonel of the 25th North Carolina Infantry in August 1861 and promoted to brigadier general in May 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Charleston, the Wilderness, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor (wounded), and Petersburg. After a lengthy convalescence, he rejoined his old brigade shortly before the surrender in 1865. Clingman practiced law in North Carolina after the war.
