Summary: | (Pre-war photograph; not in uniform). Antebellum congressman and governor of Virginia. Commissioned as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in June 1861. Major campaigns and battles include Roanoke Island, the defense of the Carolinas, Petersburg, and Appomattox. After the war, Wise returned to Virginia to practice law; he died in September 1876.
