Summary:(Not in uniform, possibly prewar image.) Secretary of War under President James Buchanan; resigned in December 1860. Commissioned as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in May 1861. Major campaigns and battles include Cross Lanes, Carnifix Ferry, and Fort Donelson. Relieved of command following inaction at Fort Donelson.
