Summary: | (Not in uniform, possibly prewar image.) Secretary of War under President James Buchanan; resigned in December 1860. Commissioned as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in May 1861. Major campaigns and battles include Cross Lanes, Carnifix Ferry, and Fort Donelson. Relieved of command following inaction at Fort Donelson. Later commissioned as a major general in the Virginia militia and commanded partisans in southwestern Virginia.
