Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Mexican War veteran. Commissioned as a colonel in the 5th Kentucky Infantry in November 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in April 1862. Major campaigns and battles include the Kentucky campaign, the Atlanta campaign, and southwestern Virginia. After the war, Williams returned to Kentucky to farm and later became a U.S. senator.
