Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Graduated from West Point 1841; Mexican War veteran. Resigned commission in 1856. Buford maintained a neutral stance on the war until Confederate forces invaded Kentucky in 1862, and he then decided to offer his services to the Confederacy. Commissioned as a brigadier general in September 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Murfreesboro, Champion's Hill, Brice's Crossroads, Richland Creek (wounded), and Selma. Following the war, Buford returned to Kentucky and raised horses. After a series of financial setbacks and the deaths of his wife and only son, Buford to committed suicide in 1884.
