After promoting through the grades, Slaughter was promoted to brigadier general in March 1862. Major campaigns and battles include the siege of Fort Pickens, Shiloh, the Kentucky campaign. He fought in the last skirmish of the war near Brownsville, Texas, a month after Appomattox. Following a brief stay in Mexico, Slaughter worked as a civil engineer and postmaster in Mobile, Alabama.
