One of a group of Southern politicians known as "Fire Eaters" for their extremist views on Secession. Rhett's attempts to work for the Confederate government were unsuccessful, and in time he became a critic of Jefferson Davis. Rhett died in St. James Parish, Louisiana, in September 1876.
