Fought at First Manassas with the U.S. 2nd Dragoons; resigned his U.S. Army commission shortly afterward. After joining the Confederacy, Armstrong served on several general staffs mainly in the West. Promoted to brigadier general in April 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Wilson's Creek, Tullahoma, Stones River, Chickamauga, Knoxville, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin, Nashville, and Selma. After the war, Armstrong served as part of the Overland Mail Service, U.S. Indian Inspector, and Assistant Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
