Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Raised a company of volunteers and began his Confederate military career as a captain in the 2nd Arkansas Volunteer Infantry in June 1861. After promoting through the grades, Govan was promoted to brigadier general in December 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign (captured and exchanged), Franklin, and Nashville. After the war, Govan returned to Arkansas as a planter and later served as an Indian Agent in Washington state.
