Summary:(In the photograph, the button arrangement is that of a brigadier general, but he still has the collar insignia of a colonel.) Graduated from Princeton, 1835; Mexican War veteran. Commissioned as colonel of the 5th Texas in October 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in June 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Seven Days', Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg (captured).
