Primarily a staff officer, Jones was promoted to brigadier general in May 1863. Major campaigns and battles include the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864.
