Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general, though coat is not double-breasted.) Elected captain in a Texas company at the outbreak of war. After promoting through the grades, Wharton was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862 and major general in November 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Murfreesboro, the Kentucky campaign, Chattanooga, and the Red River campaign. Wharton was shot and killed during an argument in April 1865.
