Commissioned as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Army in March 1861. After promoting through the grades, Gardner was promoted to brigadier general in April 1862 and major general in December 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Kentucky and Port Hudson. After a year of captivity following Port Hudson, Gardner spent the remainder of the war in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. After the war, Gardner returned to Louisiana as a planter. He died there in April 1879 and is buried in Lafayette, Louisiana. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
