(In photograph, buttons on coat indicate rank of major general, although Dibrell was never promoted beyond brigadier.) Although he opposed secession, Dibrell enlisted in the 25th Tennessee Infantry in June 1861 and became a lieutenant colonel in August 1861. He was not reelected the commander of his regiment in May 1862, but he received authorization to raise a regiment of partisan rangers, the 8th Tennessee Cavalry, of which he was colonel. Major campaigns and battles include Mill Springs, Corinth, Chickamauga, Knoxville, the Atlanta campaign, and the Carolinas. Promoted to brigadier general in January 1865. One of Dibrell's last duties was to protect the train carrying the archives of the Confederate War Department. These documents would prove instrumental in the compiling WAR OF THE REBELLION: OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES. After the war, Dibrell returned to Tennessee, where he became a community and state leader. He died in Sparta, Tennessee, in May 1888. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
