| Summary: | (Photographed in a non-regulation Confederate uniform of his own design.) Graduated from West Point, 1830; Seminole War and Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in April 1861 and was commissioned as a colonel in the Confederate Infantry shortly afterward. Promoted to brigadier general in June 1861 and major general in October 1861. Transferred to the Trans-Mississippi in 1862, where he spent the remainder of the war. Major campaigns and battles include Big Bethel, Peninsular campaign, Seven Days', and Galveston. After the war, Magruder served briefly in the Mexican Army.
