Summary: | (The eagle on his shoulder straps, visible in the original photograph but not this copy, indicates the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army. Either the photograph was taken before he resigned his commission, or he continued wearing his old uniform early in the war.) Graduated from West Point, 1854. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in March 1861 and was elected colonel of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry in May 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in July 1862 and major general in May 1863. Major campaigns and battles include Seven Day's, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg (wounded), Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg (wounded).
