Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Enlisted as a private when Virginia seceded, but was commissioned as a captain in Virginia's Black Horse Cavalry in April 1861. After promoting through the grades, Payne was promoted to brigadier general in November 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Williamsburg (wounded and captured), Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Hanover (wounded and captured), the 1864 Shenandoah campaign, Cedar Creek, Petersburg, and the defense of Richmond (wounded and captured).
