After promoting through the grades, Jones was promoted to brigadier general in August 1861 and major general in March 1862. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas. An unsuccessful officer, Jones was transferred to several different commands during the war: Department of Alabama and West Florida; District of the Gulf; District of Middle Tennessee; Department of Western Virginia; and Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. After the war, he returned to Virginia to farm. He died in Bedford Springs, Virginia, in July 1887 and is buried in Richmond. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
