Summary: | (Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Graduated from West Point, 1843; Mexican War veteran. Resigned his U.S. Army commission in 1856. Served with the Mississippi militia after the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in the Confederate Army in October 1861 and major general one year later. Spent much of 1862-1863 overseeing the fortifications of the Richmond area. Major campaigns and battles include the Atlanta campaign, Allatoona, Franklin, and defenses of Mobile.
