After promoting through the grades, Lee was promoted to brigadier general in June 1863 and major general in October 1864. Ill health prevented active field commands; Lee spent much of the war supervising Richmond fortifications and serving as aide-de-camp to Jefferson Davis. Major campaigns and battles include the defense of Richmond. After the war, Lee became an college professor and administrator. He died in February 1913 and is buried in Lexington, Virginia.
