Commissioned as a colonel in the 1st Maryland Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general in July 1861 and major general in December 1862. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Gaines Mill (wounded). After recovering from his wound, he became the commander of the Department of Richmond.
