Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Mexican War veteran. Commissioned as a colonel in the 2nd South Carolina Infantry at the outbreak of war. Promoted to brigadier general in February 1862 and major general in June 1864. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, the Peninsular campaign, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sayler's Creek. After the war, Kershaw returned to South Carolina to practice law and became involved in state politics. He died in Camden, South Carolina in April 1894 and is buried there. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
