Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, 1848. Raised the 5th Alabama Infantry at the outbreak of war and was later commissioned as a colonel in May 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in October 1861 and major general in May 1863. Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas, Seven Oakes (wounded), Seven Days', Antietam (wounded), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the 1864 Valley campaign.
