Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1847, one of its youngest graduates. Served as a colonel of a rifle unit from Charleston, South Carolina; seized Castle Pinckney during the bombardment of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Commissioned as a colonel in the 12th North Carolina Infantry in May 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in February 1862. Major campaigns and battles include the Peninsular campaign, Seven Pines (wounded and captured), New Berne, and Gettysburg (wounded).
