Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Graduated from West Point, 1835 and resigned his commission shortly afterward; Creek War and Mexican War veteran. Commissioned as a colonel in the 3rd Alabama Infantry in early 1861. Promoted to brigadier general in July 1861 and major general in August 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, the Kentucky campaign, and Stones Bridge. Due to poor health, Withers spent the remainder of the war in Alabama. After the war, Withers worked as a businessman and journalist in Mobile, Alabama, and was elected mayor of the city. He died in March 1890 and is buried in Mobile. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
